The World is completion — a cycle that has genuinely closed, with everything it contained integrated rather than merely finished.
This card appears at the end of something: a project shipped, a phase lived through, a long internal process reaching its natural conclusion. It describes the specific satisfaction of an ending that is also a whole.
The image is a figure inside a wreath — the cycle is not escaped, it is contained. The World marks the point where the experience becomes something you have rather than something that is happening to you.
Reversed, the cycle is almost closed. That can be a completion that is being withheld — one conversation, one piece of admin, one admission — and the frustration of being functionally done but technically unfinished. It can also describe a cycle begun before the previous one ended, which tends to produce the same lessons again.
A third reading is success reached without integration: the outcome arrived and none of the learning did.
In a spread, The World usually answers a question about whether something is finished. It reads as yes — and often adds that the more useful question is what to begin, since the card frequently appears just before The Fool in a reading sequence.
It means a cycle is. The card describes completion rather than the absence of problems — the thing that was on the table has been dealt with, and something else is now on the table.
Usually that a completion is being delayed by something small and unfinished. It is one of the more frustrating positions in the deck precisely because the distance remaining is short.
