The Moon describes a situation you cannot currently see clearly — where the uncertainty is the point, not a problem to be solved quickly.
This card appears around ambiguity, and specifically around the temptation to resolve it prematurely. It covers situations with incomplete information, people whose motivations are not visible, and the internal landscape of dreams and old fears rising in the dark.
The Moon is not deception exactly. It marks the difference between what is happening and what you can currently perceive — and warns that acting as though those are the same is what causes the damage.
Reversed, the fog is lifting or the person has stopped being able to tolerate it. The lifting version is genuine clarity arriving after a confusing period. The intolerance version is anxious decisions made during low visibility, which tend to need undoing later.
It can also describe a fear that has been examined and turned out to be smaller than it seemed.
In a spread, The Moon usually answers a question about whether to trust what you are hearing. It reads as: not yet. When it lands beside The Sun, the reading is about something becoming clear through the process rather than through sudden revelation.
It means something is not visible, which is not the same thing. Deception is one possibility; incomplete information, your own projection, and a situation that has not finished becoming itself are all more common.
Usually either clarity arriving after confusion, or anxiety driving decisions that should have waited. Which one it is depends on whether the fog is actually lifting or the person has simply stopped waiting for it.
